What is SEL? - O'Grady Drama Australia - Social and Emotional learning

what is SEL?

The work of Daniel Goleman on emotional intelligence and his contribution to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) has been instrumental in creating a greater appreciation of the value of activities that develop Social and Emotional Learning.

CASEL defines Social and Emotional Learning as follows:-
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) involves the processes through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

The core skills which are the outcome of Social and Emotional Learning, often termed Social Literacy, may be represented as: Self-awareness; self-management; social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.

The significant SEL value of O’Grady Drama is that we provide coaching within a drama context allowing a natural growth of those of skills in a non-competitive, enjoyable activity.
